Almost 1 in 5 Kenyan teenagers have faced four or more serious problems growing up, like abuse, neglect, or family instability. More than half have experienced one to three of these challenges. Each extra difficulty increases the chances of depression, anxiety, and bullying, especially for boys. To help, schools should start trauma-informed programs that train teachers to spot and respond to trauma and teach students social and emotional skills. Mental health tools should be adapted to Kenyan realities, including issues like hunger and displacement. Schools should also strengthen anti-bullying programs and connect with Child Protection Units. Finally, tracking the wellbeing of 1,000 adolescents over five years will help guide better policies and support for young people.
